Important Milestone Reached towards a new GIF Framework Agreement
The Generation IV International Forum (GIF) is pleased to announce that countries and international organisations have reached an important milestone towards a new GIF Framework Agreement (FA) to continue the work of the GIF with mutually willing Parties from 2025 onwards. Following several rounds of negotiations, negotiating countries have reached broad consensus on the principles and processes of a new GIF FA.
✍️ Eleven GIF member countries are expected to sign the agreement. Once signed, the 2025 GIF Framework Agreement will enable continuity of projects between the current Framework Agreement, set to expire on 28 February 2025, and the new Framework Agreement.
📑 The GIF Framework Agreement is the international agreement that establishes the framework for international collaboration to foster and facilitate achievement of the purpose and vision of the GIF, created in 2001 as a co-operative international endeavour seeking to develop the research necessary to test the feasibility and performance of fourth generation nuclear systems, and to make them available for industrial deployment by 2030. The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency serves as Technical Secretariat to the GIF.
