The 2020 Generation IV International Forum (GIF) Annual Report reflects significant progress in Generation IV (Gen-IV) reactor systems despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2001, GIF has facilitated international collaboration on R&D for six Gen-IV reactor systems using sodium, lead, gas, molten salt, and supercritical water coolants, with a goal of commercial deployment by 2030.

The development of international safety design criteria for Gen-IV reactors is emphasized, along with ongoing engagement with global nuclear safety communities such as the NEA and IAEA. GIF's efforts to integrate market opportunities and constraints at the design stage are highlighted, along with the importance of cooperation between R&D bodies and the private sector.
In 2020, GIF organized a successful workshop on advanced manufacturing and research infrastructure, marking a milestone in engaging with the nuclear private sector and start-ups. Despite the pandemic, GIF continued its studies on all systems, achieving significant milestones such as the completion of the R&D Infrastructure Task Force and the development of safety design criteria for sodium-cooled fast reactors.
The report also notes the launch of initiatives like the GIF brainstorming group on the non-electrical application of nuclear heat and efforts to link GIF more closely with the SMR sector. Additionally, GIF refreshed its branding with a new logo, website, and communications approach, and saw increased participation in its educational webinars.
Through these efforts, GIF aims to ensure the sustainable use of nuclear energy, support the transition to a decarbonized energy sector, and promote the commercialization of advanced Gen-IV systems.
